In Abidjan, ECA Supports Côte d’Ivoire's Efforts to Strengthen the Migration-Development Nexus

14 January, 2025

Abidjan, 14 January 2024 (ECA) – The ECA office for North Africa will hold, on 16 January 2025 in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) an inception workshop as part of its project on strengthening the migration-development nexus in Africa.

The meeting will bring together representatives from ministries and national government institutions involved in migration and diaspora related issues. Participants will review existing government initiatives, financial products and the challenges diaspora investors face in their country of origin. They will also develop an action plan to optimise the use of remittances in support to national development.

The workshop will take place following a fact-finding mission to Abidjan conducted as part of the project.

These activities are part of an ECA project, “Strengthening the migration-development nexus in Africa,” to be implemented in six African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Comoros, Egypt, Ghana, Lesotho and Tunisia) between 2024 and 2028.

Expected outcomes include: a better understanding of the role and of the importance of diasporas’ contribution to sustainable development in Côte d’Ivoire, of existing remittance transmission channels and of the challenges diasporas are facing; the identification of tools and policies to make the most of remittances; the development of an action plan to leverage the benefits of migration and remittances for sustainable development in Côte d’Ivoire; and the facilitation of experience sharing between member countries as part of a South-South cooperation approach.
