ECA Examines Impact of Climate Change on Employment in North Africa

22 November, 2024

Rabat, 22 November 2024 (ECA) – The office for North Africa of the UN Economic Commission for Africa will hold on Monday 25 November 2024, a webinar on “The Challenges and Impact of Climate Change on Employment in North Africa.”

The webinar aims to discuss the effects of climate change on employment in the sub-region, explore challenges in creating climate-resilient jobs and industries, and identify priority sectors for investment. This will help outline actionable recommendations for reforms aimed at encouraging the creation of sustainable jobs such as improving labour market resilience, fostering the development of green skills and implementing just transition strategies.

The webinar will also serve as a platform to evaluate the opportunities and risks associated with the transition to sustainability, particularly in terms of job creation, and discuss how the shift to a sustainable economy can address unemployment through the development of climate-resilient jobs.

Solar and wind energy projects in North Africa currently have the potential to generate thousands of jobs. However, their positive impact risks being offset by widespread job losses in sectors highly vulnerable to climate change such as agriculture or tourism.
