ECA Examines Contribution of Migrant Remittances to Development in Tunisia

Tunis, 11 November 2024 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa subregional office for North Africa will hold, in partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of Economy and Planning, an inception workshop for the program, “Strengthening the Migration-Development Nexus in Africa – Tunisia,” on 13 November in Tunis.

The event will gather representatives from relevant sectoral ministries, government agencies responsible for Tunisian expatriates, planning and investment bodies, the United Nations, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organizations. The primary objective is to examine how the Tunisian diaspora’s remittances can contribute to national development.

This initial meeting aims to enhance understanding of the remittance process, the transmission channels used, the challenges faced, and areas for potential improvement.

This workshop is part of ECA’s “Strengthening the migration-development nexus in Africa” programme (2024-2028), which is to be carried out in six African countries and increase their capacity to incorporate migrant remittances into national strategies and sectoral plans, thereby maximizing their contribution to sustainable development.
