ECA equips Ghana with toolkit to implement SDGs and AU’s Agenda 2063 into National Development Planning

Accra, Ghana, 10 October 2022 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa's (ECA) has equipped Ghana’s National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) with a toolkit for developing an integrated approach to aligning the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063 with their national development planning framework. The workshop on the Integrated Planning and Reporting Toolkit Plus (IPRT+) took place from 4 to 7 October 2022. It was organized by the ECA's Development Planning Section located in the Macroeconomics and Governance Division, in collaboration with the National Planning Development Commission (NDPC) of Ghana and with the support of the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office (UNRCO).

The toolkit will enhance efficiencies in reporting on planning outcomes, facilitate integration of both agendas in Ghana’s national development plans and improve performance tracking on the two agendas.

Kodjo Esseim Mensah-Abrampa, Director-General, National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), explained in the closing session of the workshop how the IPRT has helped Ghana review its planning process and thanked ECA for their support. He noted that “ECA’s tool has helped to smooth the process of linking planning to budgets in Ghana.” But stressed that “there is still a long way to go for Ghana to have a linkage between planning, budgeting, funding, and reporting but the IPRT+ shows Ghana how it can improve.”

The Chief of the Development Planning Section of the Macroeconomics and Governance Division at ECA, Bartholomew Armah underlined the importance of the commitment Ghana has given to the process as one of the first pilot countries for the toolkit training programme: “ECA looks forward to Ghana to be a lead pilot country of the IPRT.”

Ghana also receives support from ECA in modelling, which is complementary to the training provided on IPRT+. The four-day event is a follow-up to a virtual preparatory training session on the IPRT organized by the ECA in collaboration with the National Development Planning Commission of Ghana from 25 to 29 July 2022.
