ECA Eastern Africa Office Hosts Kenyan Student Delegation for Economic Dialogue

Kigali, Rwanda, 15 September 2025 (ECA) -The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through its Eastern Africa Office, hosted a delegation of 14 university students from across Kenya, representing the International Relations Students Association of Kenya (IRSAK), for an interactive session on regional economic development.

The visit formed part of ECA’s commitment to engaging with academic institutions and youth-led organizations across the continent, fostering knowledge exchange and promoting inclusive dialogue on Africa’s development priorities.

The students interacted with Mr. Andrew Mold, Director of ECA in Eastern Africa, who commended their interest in economic policy and regional integration. Mr. Mold encouraged the students to remain passionate about their chosen fields: “Pursue what you love. I know money is important, but always strive to do what you love most,” he said.

The visit featured a comprehensive presentation by Ms. Elena Acebes, Associate Economic Affairs Officer at ECA, who provided an overview of the current economic trends and challenges facing the Eastern Africa region. Her presentation was followed by a robust discussion, during which students posed insightful questions on trade, youth employment, and the role of regional institutions in fostering sustainable development.

In addition, Mr. Didier Habimana, Communications Officer at ECA, briefed the delegation on the Commission’s vision, mission, and mandate, as well as the key areas of work undertaken by the Eastern Africa Office. His presentation highlighted UNECA’s role in supporting member States through policy research, technical assistance, and advocacy in areas such as macroeconomic analysis, regional integration, Blue Economy and Tourism.

Mr. Mold and other ECA staff engaged directly with the students during the Q&A session, offering perspectives on the Commission’s work and its support to member States in achieving the goals of Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Eastern Africa Office of ECA remains committed to supporting youth engagement as part of its broader mandate to promote economic and social development across the region.
