The Connected Africa Girls Coding Camp is set to host its 7th edition in Niyame, Niger between 20 February – 1 March 2023 at the Ecole Superieure Nationale des Telecommunications and the Centre de Conference International. The coding camp targets young African women and girls between the ages of 12 to 25, while thousands are expected to attend virtually from around the continent.
The African Connected Girls initiative aims to narrow the digital gender gap by empowering young African women and girls with the necessary foundational building-block skills to find long-term success in digital education, employment, and entrepreneurship while creating a conducive environment for collaborative efforts and innovation. This edition will be running four main workshops on animation, gaming, IoT & robotics, and 3D printing, in addition to classes on Gender-Based Violence, UN SDGs, Agenda 2063 and personal development skills.
In the last six editions of the coding camp, over 25,000 trainees (both in-person and hybrid) benefited from training in six target countries: Ethiopia, Guinea Conakry, Cameroon, Senegal, Namibia, and Tanzania. An innovation fair will showcase the young girls’ projects developed during the coding camp at the end of the week featuring solution-oriented ideas relevant to their community’s socioeconomic challenges.
The seven-day coding camp is organized by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with the Government of Niger (Ministry of ICT and Ministry of Education) and the African Development University (ADU). The coding camp will be taking place on the margin of the 9th Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD).
