Sao Tome and Principe Tourism Satellite Account 2024

This report presents the first Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) for Sao Tome and Principe and provides a comprehensive assessment of tourism’s contribution to the national economy in 2024. Using internationally recognized TSA methodology, the study measures inbound, domestic and outbound tourism expenditure, internal tourism consumption, tourism industry output, gross value added and tourism direct gross domestic product (GDP). The findings indicate that tourism contributed approximately 11 per cent of GDP and 10 per cent of gross value added, confirming its role as a key driver of economic growth and foreign exchange earnings. The report highlights the dominance of international tourism demand, analyses tourism-related industries and expenditure patterns, and examines the relationship between tourism demand and domestic supply. It concludes with policy recommendations to strengthen tourism statistics, diversify tourism products, increase local economic linkages and support sustainable tourism development in Sao Tome and Principe.
