Socio-economic Assessment of the Blue Economy in Rwanda- Discussion of Draft Document and Toolkit

Using the UNECA Blue Economy Toolkit in 2020, we estimated that the Blue Economy in Rwanda is valued modestly at 2.6% of GDP (excluding farming in the wetlands) and employs 3.5% of the labour force. However, Blue Economy sectors contribute critical inputs into the rest of the economy, for example providing more than half of the country’s energy production through hydropower and methane.
