Regional Technical Working Group on Terrestrial Ecosystems to Validate Scoping Study on Land Policy Development in EAC

26 July, 2022 to 28 July, 2022
Dar es Salaam

The Regional Technical Working Group (TWG) on Terrestrial Ecosystems will meet on 26 to 28, July in Tanzania to review and validate key documents and research to enhance the progress of the implementation of the Africa Union (AU) declaration on land issues in Africa in the EAC Region.

These documents, developed with the support of AUC-ECA-AfDB established Africa Land Policy Centre (ALPC), will strengthen the implementation of the AU land agenda and provide technical recommendations to enhance the implementation of the project towards advancing land governance in the region

 Specifically, the meeting will validate:

  • Report on the status of land policy development, needs and challenges in EAC Partner States

  • Terms of Reference (ToR) for EAC Platform Coordination Committee on the implementation of the AU Declaration on land issues in Africa

The AU Declaration on land issues calls upon RECs in Africa to convene periodic regional platforms to facilitate experience sharing, lessons learnt and the dissemination of best practices in land policy formulation, implementation and monitoring based on Member State experiences. To translate this call into action, the ALPC has  provided strategic leadership for the implementation of the AU Declaration across Africa. The ALPC considers RECs to be key strategic partners in the implementation of the Declaration. It is in this regard that the ALPC is collaborating with the EAC to establish a platform which will enable  EAC Partner states to hold periodic forums to share their experiences and key lessons, on land policy formulation, implementation and monitoring. However, to establish the platform, it was imperative to embark on scoping study to have an assessment of the land policy terrain in the region and provide technical advisory in the establishment and operationalization of an effective platform to exchange good practices on land policy development and implementation,  in line with EAC Common Market Protocol.
