Africa is richly endowed with a variety of mineral resources, with potential for economic growth and development. But performance so far has not been consistent with expectations. The overall goal of the African Mining Vision (AMV) is to create “a transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development”.

The African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC) has been implementing the AMV over the last six years. One key observation was that effective management of the mineral resources is critical to transform the sector in a sustainable manner. Emphasis is on broader economic linkages – backward, forward and side-stream – requiring larger markets. Such linkage development message is clear with most member States. In fact, it is the reason there are no demonstrable benefits from the vast mineral resources to the economies of Africa.
