Burundi prepares to validate its green supplement for the AfCFTA national implementation strategy

Bujumbura, Burundi - December 03, 2024 (ECA) - As part of its commitment to sustainable development and proactive adaptation to the challenges posed by climate change, in order to achieve the objectives of the Vision of Burundi as an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060, the Government of Burundi, with the support of the Regional Integration and Trade Division (RITD) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), is organizing a series of workshops dedicated to the technical review and validation of the Green Supplement Report for the national implementation strategy of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The aim of the workshops, to be held from December 3 to 5, 2024, is to prepare the drafting of a strategic document designed to position Burundi to benefit from intra-African green trade opportunities. The workshops will also address topics such as: sustainable production, data-driven climate change adaptation, green standards and women's participation in green value chains.

The specific objectives of the workshops are as follows:

  • Technical review workshop (3-4 December 2024): Present and evaluate the Report of the Green Supplement study of the national strategy for implementing the AfCFTA, as well as the associated action and financing plans. Participants will include government representatives, researchers, private sector players and green economy experts.
  • National validation workshop (5 December 2024) will bring together a wider range of stakeholders to discuss the results, validate the final document and formulate recommendations for its implementation.

After these 3 days, the workshops should result in a validated report with practical recommendations and a clear financing plan for the activities proposed under the initiatives identified.
