Adam Elhiraika Assumes Role as Head of ECA Office for North Africa

Rabat, April 1st, 2024 (ECA) – Newly appointed Director Adam B. Elhiraika has officially taken office at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) office for North Africa, based in Rabat (Morocco).


A seasoned development macroeconomist, Elhiraika has previously served as Director of the ECA Macroeconomic Policy Division and the Macroeconomics and Governance Division for over 10 years where he spearheaded transformative research in macroeconomic policy, development planning and finance, industrialization and structural transformation, economic governance and public policy. Additionally, he coordinated the publication of key ECA flagship publications including the Economic Report on Africa, the Economic Governance Report and the Sustainable Development Report.


Between 2020 and 2022, Elhiraika was on loan from the UN to serve as an Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Sudan, further enriching his diverse portfolio of experience.


Prior to joining ECA in 2004, Elhiraika's career included positions as a Research Economist at the Islamic Development Bank (Saudi Arabia), an Associate Professor of Economics at the United Arab Emirates University and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Swaziland and the University of Fort Hare (South Africa).


Adam Elhiraika holds a PhD in economics from the University of Glasgow and is the author of several publications in internationally refereed journals as well as monographs and books. His main areas of contributions include macroeconomic policy, economic governance, development planning and finance and structural transformation of African economies.


Since its creation in 1963, the ECA office for North Africa has been providing Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia with strategic support to formulate policies and programs aimed at accelerating economic and social transformation with a focus on regional integration, resilient development and job creation.
