UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)
in collaboration with
MTN GROUP
ECA in collaboration with partners has embarked on creating the Africa Communication and Information Platform (ACIP) for Health and Economic Action to serve as a two-way information and communication platform between citizens and government. The platform will bring together for the first time, the major mobile network operators on the continent including MTN, Vodacom, Airtel, Ethio Telecom, Safaricom and Orange, ITU as well as other partners to support each country’s National COVID-19 Taskforce, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Finance, Economy, and Planning, and international development organizations, including Africa CDC and ECA with intelligent information and analysis of live data for decision-making. Such information and analysis will include surveys to measure public health interventions, physical distancing adherence and socio-economic effects of COVID-19 response, especially mitigation measures. The platform will serve as a crucial tool to allocate resources and implement responses and actions to mitigate and suppress the health and economic impact of COVID-19 in Africa.
The establishment of the platform follows a meeting of African Ministers of Finance on the impacts of COVID-19 on 1st April 2020 in which ECA was requested to assist Member States to respond to the socio-economic impact of the pandemic. The concept and structure of the platform has been extensively discussed during virtual meetings with Ministers of Finance, and ministers of ICT.
The Platform will be launched on 23rd June, 2020 at a virtual webinar with member states representatives, partner organizations, the media and telecom entities.
