Abidjan, 6 December 2023 (ECA) – The Deputy Ministry to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Ivorians Abroad, responsible for African Integration and Ivorians Abroad, initiated a training workshop on migration statistics and results-based management (RBM) on 5 December 2023 in Abidjan. This event was organized by the General Directorate for the Diaspora in partnership with the ECA Office for North Africa.
The two-day workshop, attended by over forty participants, aimed to bolster national capabilities in migration statistics. The training primarily concentrated on Results-Based Management (RBM), its associated tools and indicators, and their effective application in managing migration issues.
"Collecting, using and analysing accurate, reliable and disaggregated migration data is fundamental for a better inclusion of migration in public policy planning and development processes," said Samia Hamouda, an economist at the ECA Office for North Africa, during the meeting.
"It is important for us not only to acquire harmonised statistical data but also to use it efficiently thanks to results-based management," added Mr. Karamoko Gaoussou, Director General in charge of the Diaspora.
Côte d'Ivoire, a major hub for migratory flows in West Africa, hosts approximately 6.5 million migrants, nearly 22% of its total population of 29.5 million.
The workshop was held as part of an ECA project conducted in six African countries with a significant history of migration and commitment to address its challenges: Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
The project's goal is to enhance national capacities, assisting countries in achieving goals 1 and 18 of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). These goals include "Collecting and using accurate and disaggregated data to inform evidence-based policies" and "Investing in skills development and facilitating mutual recognition of skills, qualifications, and competences." The project also aligns with SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 1 (ending poverty), SDG 10 (reducing inequality), and SDG 4 (quality education for all).
Scheduled from 5 to 6 December, the workshop builds upon the results of study of migration statistics in Côte d'Ivoire. The study monitored the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and the SDGs with the goal of strengthening the knowledge and capabilities of national officials in migration statistics and enhancing the formulation and monitoring of indicators aimed at valuing the skills of migrants.
