Dakar, 21 September 2023 – The African Institute for Economic Development and Planning of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) welcomed the 2023 cohort of African leaders and practitioners of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) Centers, in Dakar, Senegal, during a regional face-to-face training workshop. Fifteen leaders and fifteen practitioners, from Cameroon, Union of the Comoros, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, took part in this regional training workshop from 19 to 21 September 2023.
This training workshop is organized within the framework of the Pan-African Initiative for the Digital Transformation of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and Skills Development Systems in Africa. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) lunched this Initiative in 2020 as part of the response to COVID-19, in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Institut de la Francophonie pour l'Education et la Formation (IFEF) and the African Union Development Agency of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (AUDA-NEPAD).
The main objective is to provide TVET leaders and practitioners of the initiative’s Cohort 2023 an opportunity to better understand key elements of building the national technical team (NTT) as well as an operational and sustainable national network, to foster the digitalization of the national TVET and skills development system in their own context.
“Investing in the digital transformation of TVET is fundamental for the industrialization of Africa and crucial to rescue the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the continent.”, said Karima Bounemra Ben Soltane, Director of IDEP, at the oppening ceremony.
“The digital Transformation of technical and vocational education and training will accelerate economic growth,” underlined Dimitri Sanga, the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for West Africa,
“The development of digitalization and skills development strategies in your countries by 2024 will strengthen the ecosystem” said Mona Laroussi, Director of the IFEF.
TVET in numbers
In 2023, 243 participants (94 leaders and 149 practitioners) from 5 African countries took part in the online training course, with an overall success rate of 70%. The thirty participants, who took part in the regional training workshop in Dakar, were selected from these e-learning.
In 2022, 340 participants (140 leaders and 200 practitioners from 8 African countries (Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Gabon, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria and Togo)) took part in the online training course, with an overall success rate of 55%. Subsequently, 48 of them took part in a regional face-to-face training workshop in Dakar in July 2022.
By 2021, 220 participants (103 TVET leaders and 117 practitioners from 7 African countries (Burkina-Faso, Guinea-Conakry, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Ghana and Liberia)) had taken part in the online training course, with an overall success rate of 57%. A further 43 participants took part in the regional face-to-face training course in Dakar.
