Addis Ababa, Ethiopia , 6 August 2021 – The UN Economic Commission for Africa has organized a meeting to enhance the capacity of Ethiopian planning experts in the design, implementation and monitoring of their development strategies.
The one day workshop was organized in collaboration with Ethiopian Planning and Development Commission (PDC). It is one of a series of meetings that are offered to countries and intended to support governments with useful tools to formulate developmental goals that are inclusive and coherent with continental and global development agendas.
In recent years, ECA has developed a toolkit known as “Integrated planning and reporting toolkit (IPRT), a dynamic software to support African countries to align their national development plans to the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to ECA, the toolkit offers dashboards that allow for visualization of summary information on the alignment of the two Agendas as well as country performance regarding alignment with the two agendas.
According to Mr Joseph Atta-Mensah from ECA’s Macroeconomics and Governance Division, the toolkit is designed to improve development planning capacities of countries in terms of prioritization and alignment of development interventions as well as tracking progress and reporting.
“With the goals, targets and indicators of the two Agendas already in-built into the software, users can visually assess the level and strength of alignment between the two Agendas at the click of a button”.
Cooperation is necessary for success
The workshop, held in Addis Ababa and online, also draw on the expertise of Ethiopia, which shared the experience on the system called “Digital Monitoring and Reporting System”. The presentation of the system was done by Mr Solomon Tesfaselassie, Adviser to the Planning and Development Commission.
Sharing experiences between ECA and the Federal Republic of Ethiopia was done in the framework of facilitating the transfer of useful techniques from one to another and enhancing cooperation efforts between the two parties.
ECA has been providing a series of training activities on the Integrated planning and reporting toolkit (IPRT). Other countries that requested the training for the toolkit include Benin, Cameroon, Comoros, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Niger, Mauritania and Tunisia.
