The first intergovernmental conference for the Africa Regional Review of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) will take place on 31 August and 1 September 2021.
Hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco, the hybrid conference is being jointly organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Network on Migration.
The purpose of the conference is for African member States to review national, sub-regional and continental progress towards the implementation of the GCM – a cooperative framework aiming to address international migration in all its dimensions.
Member States will also discuss emerging challenges and opportunities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic while considering new priorities and additional resources required to fully implement the Global Compact for Migration.
Ahead of the conference, side events will take place on 26 August while a multi-stakeholder consultation will be held on 27 August, where a wide variety of stakeholders will share their insights on the implementation trajectory.
