Honoring Progress, Recognizing Challenges, and Advancing Gender Equality
Addis Ababa, 8 March 2025 – The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day 2025 under the theme: “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
This year’s celebration marks a significant milestone, occurring 30 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a transformative framework for gender equality that remains unmatched in ambition. The commitments made in Beijing laid the foundation for progress, but critical gaps persist, requiring decisive action.
Progress in Advancing Gender Equality
Over the past three decades, African countries have made notable strides in advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls:
-
Gender parity in education has improved, with more girls accessing primary and secondary schooling.
-
Maternal mortality rates have declined, leading to better health outcomes for women.
-
Adolescent fertility rates have decreased, reflecting greater awareness and access to reproductive health services.
-
Women’s representation in political leadership and public life has increased, with more women taking seats in parliaments, media, and key decision-making roles.
These achievements reflect the resilience and leadership of African women and the collective efforts of governments, civil society, and development partners.
Persistent Gaps and the Path Forward
Despite progress, significant challenges remain:
-
Economic barriers continue to hinder women’s access to financial resources, land, and credit.
-
The gender digital divide persists, limiting women’s participation in technology-driven economies.
-
Gender-based violence remains a widespread crisis, affecting millions of women and girls.
-
Women’s representation in leadership and decision-making roles is still below global targets.
The 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration presents an opportunity to reflect on whether these commitments have translated into meaningful policy action and inclusive development.
A Call to Action: Advancing Equality for All Women and Girls
ECA’s Executive Secretary, Claver Gatete, emphasized the urgency of economic and social empowerment for women:
“The pursuit of economic and social empowerment for African women is not just a goal; it’s a necessity for a thriving society. When women rise, communities flourish. Let’s champion equal opportunities, support women-led initiatives, and break down barriers together!”
As we mark International Women’s Day 2025, ECA reaffirms its commitment to accelerating action to advance gender equality, ensuring that every woman and girl has the rights, power, and opportunities to thrive. Strengthening policies, increasing investment in women-led initiatives, and fostering an inclusive economic environment are key to building a sustainable future.
