Background
The Government of DRC held the DRC-Africa Business Forum on “Fostering the development of a battery, electric vehicle, and renewable energy industry value chain and market in Africa” under the patronage of H.E M. President Tshisekedi. This event was organised with the support of the ECA and its partners including Afreximbank, AFC, AfDB, BADEA and the UN Global Compact.
The Government of the DRC together with the Organising Partners are committed to the establishment of a battery minerals industry in the DRC utilising the mineral resources of the DRC and other African countries.
Steinbeis Global Institute (SGIT) which is part of the Steinbeis University in Germany and the Japanese Lithium Ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center (LIBTEC) – which is under the leadership of Nobel prize winner Prof. Akira Yoshino (the inventor of the Lithium Ion Battery) - have confirmed to cooperate with Lubumbashi University to set up an advanced Battery Research Center in the DR Congo.
The discussions will be the opportunity for both institutions to initiate discussions about this project, with the support of the Minister of industry and UNECA.

Objective: The main objective of the Centre is to support the development of a competitive battery, electric car and renewable energy value chain in Africa, through training higher-skilled workers. To this end, the official launching ceremony will bring together UNILU, SGIT, UNZA and CBU and other partners to lay the ground of the of the Centre.
