Leveraging renewable energy resources for a just energy transition in Southern Africa
Exploring the opportunities and challenges

In  the study  forming  the basis  for  the present  report,  the opportunities  for  and challenges  of  developing renewable  energy  for  a  just energy  transition  in Southern  Africa  were explored.  The  study was  motivated  by the  realization  that Southern Africa is increasingly at risk of disasters related to climate change, such as recurring and intensifying droughts,  calamitous  cyclones and  destructive floods, which destroy crops and ar-able  land,  damage infrastructure,  cause  loss of  human  life and  injury,  and disrupt  markets  and trade.  Notably,  these disasters  are  compounding the  subregion’s  existing economic  and  social vulnerabilities, including long-term low economic  growth, high  unemployment,  food insecurity,  extreme  poverty and  inequality,  infrastructure  challenges and colonial political legacies.
