RES4Africa Partners with ECA to Deliver First Technical and Vocational Training for Eritrean Renewable Energy Professionals

The RES4Africa Technical and Vocational School has partnered with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) to conclude the first training session of its latest comprehensive training program, marking a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy solutions across Africa. This initiative, organized by ECA, RES4Africa and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Eritrea, delivered quality technical training to experts from across various institutions that develop and apply renewable energy for lighting and productive uses. Enel Foundation along with other regional and international partners supported the development of the Mini-Grid Academy training program which delivered its 34th edition in Asmara.  The training underscores the commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions and building a skilled workforce to meet the continent's growing energy needs.

Access to reliable and affordable energy is essential for economic development, especially in rural areas with limited services. To meet the 2030 goal of universal electricity access (SDG 7), innovative approaches are needed. Renewable energy solutions, such as solar mini-grids, provide a viable path forward. Since evolving from the Micro-Grid Academy in January 2023, the RES4Africa Technical and Vocational School has continued its mission with a renewed focus on training young African professionals, addressing both urban and rural energy needs.

The first session, held from September 18th to 21st, 2024, trained 30 participants on Module 1 – Decentralized Energy Systems and Module 2 – DRE Site Selection and Engineering. Participants engaged in dynamic lectures guided by international experts and supported by e-learning resources. Upon completion, participants receive certificates recognizing their new skills and dedication.

The program will continue with two additional training sessions planned for November and December 2024. Module 3 will cover System Design, Operation & Maintenance (O&M) and Safety, while Module 4 will address EPC, Economics, and Regulatory Frameworks, including field visits to provide hands-on experience.

The training program not only equips participants with technical, economic, and regulatory competencies but also fosters a network of professionals committed to advancing renewable energy in Africa. By addressing regulatory, financial, and technical challenges while emphasizing social inclusion, the RES4Africa Technical and Vocational School reaffirms its commitment to driving progress toward a more sustainable and equitable energy future for the continent.
