Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 29 November 2023 (ECA) - Trade and environmental experts will on 4 December 2023 meet to discuss the relationship between trade and the environment at a session organized by The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
This session to be held alongside UN Climate Change Conference COP28 will seek to explore the ways in which trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), can become environmentally sensitive and support the continent’s sustainable future.
The objective of this session is to raise awareness of the climatic implications of increased trade under the AfCFTA and initiate a conversation on how best to meet Africa’s climate goals; raise awareness on the feasibility for Africa, as a continent, to meet its climate ambitions under multiple scenarios; promote understanding of the relationship between trade and the environment, both from a perspective of how more trade can exacerbate environmental problems as well as contribute to their mitigation; to better understand the resources needed to drive Africa’s sustainable transition; and to help support the idea of a continental carbon market and enhance understanding thereof.
The results through a background presentation of ECA and the Centre d’Etudes Prospectives et d’Informations Internationales (CEPII) research, followed by a panel discussion of experts, will answer questions that arise, on Africa’s ability to realize its emissions reductions goals, the resources needed to meet nationally determined contributions, and the feasibility of instituting and establishing African carbon markets.
