The theme of the present report is leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area for the reduction of poverty and inequality in Southern Africa. The theme is in line with the African Union Theme for 2023, which was “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area implementation”. In the present report, therefore, the central issues pertaining to the implementation of the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area in Southern Africa are examined, along with the potential for poverty and inequality reduction in the subregion, taking into account the heterogeneity within and between countries.
A robust, analytical and evidence-based approach has been adopted in the preparation of the present report. The intention is for the findings to help with the process of implementing the Agreement in Southern Africa, with a view to maximizing the Area’s potential benefits with regard to poverty and inequality reduction in the subregion.
