The Social Policy Section of the Gender, Poverty and Social Policy Division (GPSPD) will convene an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on 31st October and 1st November 2023, at the United Nations Conference Centre (CR3) in Addis Ababa on the theme of “Jobs in Africa or Jobs for Africans? Integrating Skills migration in national youth employment policy strategies”.
Africa’s future growth and prosperity largely depends on whether young African’s can obtain suitable jobs. By 2050, the continent is expected to add 184 million its youth population (15-24 years), and one third of youth at that time will be African. While the continent’s growing youth population offers Africa the prospect of reaping the benefits of the anticipated demographic dividend, improve people’s lives and reduce poverty, it also poses the greatest challenge for policymakers as lack of decent and sufficient jobs for youth could lead to fragility, economic and social upheaval.
During the two-day meeting, experts will review the key findings of the draft report and the deliberations will focus on how demographic trends as well as education and skills migration can be better harnessed to accelerate national and regional actions for improved employment and economic opportunities for young Africans.
