There is a global learning crisis exacerbated by the lasting impacts of pandemic-related school closures, climate change, conflict, and economic slowdown. Moreover, 7 in 10 10-year old children in low- and middle-income countries cannot read and understand a simple story. The low access to quality education and training in many partner countries, also when it comes to basic skills, results in a mismatch between education and the labour market, further undermining economic growth. Young people aged 15 to 24 are having difficulty entering the workforce, with youth unemployment rates close to 30 percent in lower-income countries. Close to 40 percent of employers report lacking workers with the skills they need, and the skills gap between low- and high-income countries is deepening. In addition, countries with high proportions of out-of-school children are more prone to poverty, instability, and violence that continue to push people to migrate towards security and better livelihoods.
