Maseru, 09 May 2025 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Subregional Office for North Africa (SRO-NA) and ECA Subregional Office for Southern Africa in partnership with Ministry of Finance and Development Planning will hold on 12-15 May 2025 in Maseru, Lesotho a Fact-Finding mission and Workshop for the Program on: “Strengthening the Migration-Development Nexus in Africa”.
The fact-finding mission aims to meet with the main national stakeholders and initiate discussion and exchange on the progress made, initiatives launched by the government, challenges and needs to better optimize the contribution of remittances to sustainable development in Lesotho.
The workshop to launch the Program will be held on Thursday 15th May in Avani Hotel (Maseru). It will bring together representatives of sectoral ministries and other government institutions responsible for planning and Lesotho Diaspora, as well as private sector and academia representatives.
Expected outcomes will include: enhance knowledge and understanding of the role and importance of diasporas’ contribution to sustainable development in Lesotho, identifying the existing initiatives/tools/actions/policies to optimize remittances’ use, improved understanding of the channels of transmission of remittances, challenges faced and , looking ahead, what needs to ensure better use of their remittances in Lesotho, establishing a national technical working group and developing an action plan with 2-3 priorities to leverage the benefits of migration and remittances for sustainable development in Lesotho.
These activities are part of an ECA Program, “Strengthening the migration-development nexus in Africa,” being implemented in six African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Comoros, Egypt, Ghana, Lesotho and Tunisia) between 2024 and 2028.
