Can African countries escape the middle-income trap?

15 November, 2023

Rabat, 15 November 2023 (ECA) – The ECA Office for North Africa, in collaboration with the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Expatriates, and other partners, will host a webinar on “Addressing Gaps and Challenges in Africa’s Middle-Income Countries” on Tuesday 28 November.

This event will provide policymakers, development practitioners and academics with a platform to discuss how African countries can break free from the middle-income trap by leveraging the potential of the 4th Industrial Revolution, while also taking into account the critical need for a green transition and the financial constraints these countries are facing.

Discussions will focus on two critical issues:

1) How African middle-income countries (MICs) can bolster their human capital in support to sustainable structural transformation while preventing brain drain?

2) How can these countries address their debt burdens and foster inclusive and sustainable growth as growing out of debt is becoming increasingly difficult; and what reforms and regional partnerships can ensure their needs are better addressed.

Despite their diversity, middle income countries in Africa and other regions are have several challenges in common as they strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improve their populations’ living conditions. Despite having made significant contributions to Africa’s economic and social progress and demonstrated resilience amid cascading crises since the early 2000s, most are currently struggling to achieve the SDGs, including SDG 1 (No poverty).
