Recognizing that most international migration takes place within regions, Member States called upon relevant subregional, regional, and cross-regional processes, platforms, and organizations, to review the implementation of the GCM at the regional level beginning in 2020, and every four years thereafter1. The first review of the implementation of the GCM by the Member States of the UNECA Region was held virtually on 31 August – 1st September 2021. The resulting summary report informed the first International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) that took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 17- 20 May 2022 and resulted in the adoption of the IMRF Progress Declaration, by General Assembly Resolution 76/2662. 

The 2nd Regional Review aims to facilitate increased regional collaboration among Member States in reviewing the implementation of the GCM and formulating recommendations for the next IMRF in 2026. The framework for this second round provides for discussions on regional priorities and gaps in GCM implementation, opportunities for regional cooperation on migration, integration of GCM objectives into existing migration governance frameworks, and monitoring of regional progress and challenges.
