The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union are jointly implementing a project on African migration – “International Migration in Africa: Shaping a Positive Narrative and Removing Barriers to Mobility.” Through the project, ECA and AUC are pursuing a holistic approach to free movement of persons and migration in Africa. The project aims, primarily, to highlight drivers of and address challenges to free movement of persons and migration in Africa; maximize benefits of migration to both migrant-sending and migrant-hosting nations while minimizing hardships experienced by African migrants and all mobile Africans; and propose high-impact activities involving constructive engagements with key stakeholders on free movement of persons and migration in Africa. ECA runs a component of the project focusing on the promotion of free movement of persons and creating pathways for labor mobility and skills portability in Africa. This component of the project seeks to contribute to efforts towards the ratification and implementation of the Protocol to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community relating to Free Movement of Persons, Right Residence and Right of Establishment (the AU FMP Protocol) and to establish the potential contribution of free movement of persons to the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
