The Regional Integration and Trade Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa is convening a virtual, inception and methodology workshop on 15 May 2023 on the 11th edition of the flagship report on Assessing Regional Integration In Africa (ARIA XI). ARIA XI is on the theme: “Beyond the AfCFTA: Bringing the Continental Customs Union and Common Market About”. The ARIA series offers deep insights into themes of considerable significance to African policymakers, trade negotiators, academia, and development stakeholders, based on empirically and theoretically grounded research.
ARIA XI will focus on assessing the progress made in Africa’s integration journey (especially since the advent of the AfCFTA), and the preparedness of the continent to take the next critical step in this journey as envisioned both in the Abuja Treaty and the AfCFTA Agreement – i.e. the establishment of a continental Customs Union and subsequently, a continental Common Market. The overall objective of the meeting is to brainstorm on the ARIA XI concept note, the proposed methodological approach and chapter outline, with a view of better refining them and setting the ground for the research/data collection and write-up.
The virtual meeting will bring together focal persons from ARIA Series Partner institutions, as well as a select number of experts drawn from academia, think tanks, Regional Economic Communities, the private sector and civil society.
