  2. 2025 World Statistics Day – Africa Segment

ASC

Background

World Statistics Day (WSD), celebrated every five years on 20 October, was established by the United Nations General Assembly (Resolution 69/282) to recognize the importance of official statistics in shaping evidence-based policies and sustainable development. The 2025 edition marks the fourth global celebration and coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

In Africa, ongoing efforts to modernize national statistics systems, strengthen the data ecosystem under SHaSA II, and promote digital transformation through regional initiatives such as ECAStats and the African Continental Data Portal align with the 2025 WDS theme. These initiatives demonstrate the continent’s commitment to leveraging data for sustainable development and regional integration.

The theme for 2025 is “Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone”, emphasizing inclusivity, accessibility, and the transformative power of high-quality data.
