Background

African Green Climate Finances National Designated Authorities Network (AfDAN) jointly with Government of Kenya, UCLG Africa, UNECA UNDRR, Commonwealth Secretariat and PACJA among other partners successfully hosted the Climate Finance Forum for GCF NDAs and BCRUP focal points from Africa pilot countries in Nairobi on 22nd - 23rd August 2024 ahead of the 12th session of the conference on climate and development in Africa (CCDA XII) and the 10th special session of AMCEN that was hosted in Abidjan from the 30th August to 6th of September 2024.

The above event was followed by High-Level side events on building climate resilience with the urban poor (BCRUP) on 7th and 13th November 2024 at the 12th session of the world urban forum (WUF12) and COP29 in Cairo and Baku respectively. The engagements focused on regional and global levels. The key outcome of the BCRUP engagements at COP29, Baku, Azerbaijan was the launch of fundraising campaign to mobilize USD 6 billion to support BCRUP implementation within the initial 10-year implementation window. these platforms provided an opportunity to accelerate the consolidation and mobilization for the regional readiness project in the African context.

to date, a total of 20 African countries have demonstrated interest in participating in the BCRUP Regional Readiness Project notably; Congo Brazzaville, Burundi, Guinea Conakry, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Morocco, Kenya, Cote D'Ivoire, Eswatini, Egypt, Cameroon, Rwanda, Mozambique, Botswana, Gabon, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Union of Comoros and Nigeria.

To realize the above objectives in terms of climate finance mobilization at national and continental level, AfDAN jointly with UNECA and the BCRUP secretariat intend to hold a workshop during the 38th African Union Ordinary Session on 14th - 15th February 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The proposed workshop aims at bringing together National Designated Authorities (NDAs) and BCRUP Focal points from 20 Africa Pilot Countries to make contributions in the development of the AfDAN strategic plan and further validate the BCRUP regional readiness project for submission to Green Climate Fund before the end of February 2025.

• presentation and validation of the BCRUP Regional Readiness Project;
• Securing pending No Objection Letters to the reginal Readiness Project;
• Receiving validation list of Urban Areas and Vulnerable Neighbourhoods of Action from African Pilot countries.
