The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA), in collaboration with the Economic Development and Well-being Research Group (EDWRG) from the School of Economics at the University of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, will host a public lecture on the topical issue of how to leverage technology and 4IR in alleviating poverty, income inequality and youth unemployment in South Africa.
South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of poverty, income inequality, and youth unemployment. Despite various policy interventions and programs, these intertwined challenges require innovative and multifaced approaches. This public lecture will bring together academics, policymakers, and students to discuss and explore effective strategies for addressing these issues, with a focus on key priority sectors.
The 4IR holds significant potential to reduce unemployment, poverty, and inequality by driving innovation, creating new job opportunities, and increasing access to education and essential services. By harnessing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, and digital platforms, 4IR can empower small businesses, enhance productivity, and open up new markets, particularly in underserved communities.
Objectives of the Joint Public Lecture
The public lecture seeks to facilitate and promote student engagement and awareness:
- To understand the potential of 4IR technologies in driving economic growth and job creation.
- Identify innovative strategies and solutions leveraging 4IR technologies to reduce youth unemployment.
- To explore how the youth may harness innovation and pursue business development, with a particular focus on innovation ecosystems and financing instruments for young entrepreneurs.
- Discuss the essential skills required for the digital economy and how to equip the youth with these skills.
- Explore partnerships between educational institutions, government, and the private sector to provide relevant training and education.
