The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 form the overarching frameworks that govern the mandate of the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). And yet, owing to a confluence of economic and political headwinds, Africa is off track in achieving the goals of both agendas.
Given this trajectory, ECA leadership must adapt to the changing global landscape. The institution is prioritizing opportunities that will enable Africa to make broad strides forward—moving away from piecemeal and project activities toward regional and scalable interventions.
On April 17, 2024, the Africa Growth Initiative (AGI) at Brookings will host H.E. Claver Gatete, ECA’s recently appointed executive secretary, for a fireside chat on the institution’s strategy to fast-track implementation of the SDGs and Agenda 2063.
