COP29: Opening Ceremony | UN Climate Change | Live from Baku, Azerbaijan
Discussions at the recent session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB60) emphasized the priority all Parties should give to the next generation of NDCs informed by the Global Stocktake (GST) outcome at COP28 and the need for them to mark a step change on implementation. It is acknowledged that 1.5°C -aligned NDCs will be essential to meet the collective goals in the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, SB60 also evidenced clear challenges to deliver ambition without the necessary means of implementation in place.
The COP28, COP29 and COP30 presidencies (the Troika), has called on the UN Secretary-General to mobilize the entire UN System to support Parties, especially developing countries, in designing, delivering, and implementing NDCs.
Since May, ECA has coordinated fortnightly meetings of Pan-African institutions (AUC, ECA, AfDB, AUDA-NEPAD), which are mandated by the AU Summit to support Africa’s participation at the global climate change negotiations. At the core of this assistance is the technical backstopping and logistics support to the African Group of Climate Change Negotiators (AGN).
The 12th Climate Change Development for Africa (CCDA) took place in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire from 30th August to 2nd September 2024 on the theme “Financing Climate Adaptation and Resilience in Africa”. It was held on the sidelines of the 10th AMCEN special meeting. The event elicited issues, solutions, and actions needed to address the risks climate change continues to pose in Africa. The conference, which was organized in collaboration with AUC, ECA, AfDB and Cote D’Ivoire government, and other regional institutions, concretized Africa’s common positions for COP29, including financing resilience, the global negotiation tracks (NCQG, NDCs, GGA and Carbon markets), climate science and state of the climate in Africa. The conference convened policy makers, researchers, and civil society, who produced key messages that informed a presentation, by the African Group of Negotiators (AGN), of Africa’s common position for COP29. The outcome also provided technical input into the AMCEN meeting held back-to-back with the conference.
