Context and Rationale
The AISCC member states—Cabo Verde, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, and Tanzania (Zanzibar)—are among the nations most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including sea-level rise, cyclones, droughts, coastal erosion, and flooding. However, these countries possess limited institutional capacity to map their natural resources and conduct multi-hazard assessments, which hinders their access to climate finance and the implementation of appropriate resilience measures.
Against this backdrop, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) approved the RESIslands readiness project—with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) as the implementing partner—with a budget of USD 4,943,086 over 30 months. This project aims to strengthen the institutional capacity of the AISCC and its nine member states regarding risk assessment and multi-hazard disaster management.
The launch workshop marks the official start of the project. It brings together all regional and national stakeholders to align on a shared vision, project objectives, and implementation modalities.
