Africa Gender Index 2023 - Analytical Report
In 2025, the world will observe the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA).
This milestone will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Together, these frameworks provide an ambitious roadmap for achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment, ensuring no one is left behind.
The BPfA outlines commitments made at national, regional, and global levels to end discrimination, promote women’s rights, and advance gender equality. The United Nations, through Resolution E/RES/2022/5, has called on all Member States to conduct comprehensive national reviews every five years to assess achievements and identify gaps in implementing the BPfA.
Africa Regional Report
In response, the ECA will prepare a regional synthesis report for Africa, drawing from national BPfA review reports submitted by countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Seychelles, and Tunisia.
This regional report will be discussed at the Africa Ministerial Conference on Beijing+30 Review, scheduled for November 2024, as part of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment. The regional report will highlight the progress made, lessons learned, and challenges encouraged by countries in the implementation of the BPfA since the last review in 2019.
Outcomes
The outcomes of the Africa Beijing+30 Review Conference will contribute to a global report to be presented at the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2025. It will assess how countries have met their BPfA commitments, focusing on progress and challenges in the 12 critical areas of concern.
The review will end with a call to action for governments, civil society organizations, the private sector, and individuals to build stronger partnerships to bridge widening gender gaps. This call will underline the need for greater commitments and resources to accelerate progress on achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The ECA, in collaboration with UN Women and the African Union Commission, is conducting the sixth regional review of BPfA’s implementation in Africa.
