Background
The mult ilateral climate change processes have evolved over t ime from the non-binding commitment under UN Convent ion to the legally binding commitments for developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol and to the Paris Agreement (PA) that build upon the convent ion and brings all nat ions into a common cause to undertake ambit ious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist developing countries. The PA also address the issues of loss and damage.
Following the complet ion of the PA’s rulebook, the process is now focusing on the implementat ion of mit igat ion and adaptat ion with enhanced support to assist developing countries to achieve their commitments. The PA added the loss and damage into its workstream. This online training will deal with negot iat ion of work programmes under the following areas; just transit ion; adaptat ion mainly dealing with adaptat ion finance and capacity; operat ionalizat ion of the loss and damage fund and its assessment ; negot iat ing carbon markets; climate finance in the context of financing adaptat ion, assess to exist ing funds, methods of tracking, project development , monitoring and evaluat ion, gender and youth.
Learning Objectives
The aim of this assignment is to build the negot iat ing capacity among the young African negot iators to fully part icipate in the implementat ion of the various workstreams under the Convent ion and the Paris Agreement .
Furthermore, the online course will empower the African Youth on how to undertake vigorous ambit ious climate act ion using support provided to overcome the climate change cries as current efforts by Part ies and Non-state actors to reduce GHGs emissions are not enough to keep temperature increase below 1.5C.
At the end of the course, part icipants will be able to:
- Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the current and ongoing status of the negot iat ions of the work programs in areas such as just transit ion, climate finance with emphasis on financing adaptat ion, assess to exist ing funds, tracking, development of projects and monitoring and evaluat ion.
- Art iculate clearly the ongoing negot iat ions on the operat ionalizat ion of the loss and damage fund as well as its assessment and the negot iat ing carbon markets.
- Command an insight ful knowledge of the workstreams and programmes under The United Nat ions Framework Convent ion on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement negot iat ion process on gender and youth.
