Process from Vision to Johannesburg

1. 1999: Stakeholders Meeting (mainly NGOs) in Gabarone, Botswana condemned Regional bodies such OAU, ECA, AfDB for not mobilizing Africa for the Vision Development Process.

2. AfDB reacted by holding Stakeholders consultations in Abidjan late 1999. Decision made to organize Africa Caucus Day at 2nd WWF in The Hague.

3. March 200 Caucus held successfully and Vision present in The Hague.

4. April 2000 Follow-up Meeting in Addis Ababa between OAU, AFDB, ECA and tasks shared:

  • OAU Political Mobilsation
  • ECA- Technical Analyses
  • AFDB financial mobilsation.
  • Failure to get Vision approved by Head of States meeting in Lome July.
  • Suggestion to create AMCOW by UNEP( Halifa Drammeh)
  • September Core Ministers Meet in Nairobi on sidelines of the Launch of AWF supported by the World Bank

5. April 2001. IGWA Meets in Niamey and decide to program Inter-Sessional Activities

6. September 2001 1st IGWA IWRM Subregional in Accra

  • WWAP invited to discuss Focus on Africa at WSSD.
  • IGWA decides on African Water Development Report (AWDR) to be linked methodologically to WWAP but more in-depth and Africa owned

7. September2001 African Water Task Force

8. Dutch Support for Partnerships with AfDB and ECA

  • ECA Support for AWDR, AWICH, IWRM Workshops and Accra Conference.

9. April 2002 Accra Conference of AWTF (Setting Priorities and Accra Declaration). Also Launch of AMCOW and Abuja Statement.

10. AWTF decides to organize WaterDome at WSSD

11. August 2002 Water Dome a great Success and WSSD makes Water #1 Priority out of five: Water Energy Hygiene Agriculture and Biodiversity (WEHAB). AMCOW Constitution approved by Ministers. Also Africa Water Facility announced by AWTF.

12. Consultative Meeting on writing AWDR for North and West Africa.

13. October AWTF Meeting in Abidjan.

14. November 9th IGWA Session in UNEP

15. December IWRM Workshop for Southern Africa

16. Feb 2003 IWRM for Central Africa;.
